![]() Mumtaz was the Shah’s most treasured wife so he promised her they would always be together, and that he’d spend time with her each day, even after she was gone, after breakfast, lunch and dinner. Shah Jahan started to build the Taj Mahal in 1631, serving as a mausoleum for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14 th(!) child. The love story serving as the foundation of the Taj is poignant and sad. ![]() The Taj Mahal proved to beat all of the praising superlatives. ![]() The chaos, noise and sweat melted away for a split second, ahhhhh. Security is no joke in India, the guns are huge! Inside the gate and following the signs for the high value ticket holders (tourist tickets for non-Indians coming with a chance to jump the long lines at about 30 times the price), our group of ten walked through the red sandstone gate to glimpse our first up-close shot of the Taj. We split into lines for men and women to pass through the metal detectors and have our bodies and bags scanned. Getting ready to jump into queue for the Taj, we were thrilled to have a guide to pull us past the touts and wrong lines, so we followed his floppy hair and pink shirt as he snaked us through the crowd toward the east gate. The hotels are expensive and the town is known to be and certainly looked really seedy. It was hard to cut the lines of the domes from the fog, but sharing this once-in-a-lifetime view with my love was proving to be more than we could have imagined!Īgra is universally considered to be miss-able aside from the Taj, to put it nicely. Walking though Agra Fort, we caught our first glimpse of the Taj off in the distance.
